After being struck by hijacked planes, the Twin Towers of the US World Trade Centre collapsed, and one of the most iconic images of the disaster is of a man falling from the sky.
Hollywood Man Creates Makeshift 9/11 Memorial In His Front Yard
Richard Drew snapped this photo shortly after the horrific attacks, and it depicts a man plunging to his death against the North Tower’s steel framework. The image is not unique in depicting the tragic deaths of victims of the events of September 11, 2001. The image’s composition, though, is what truly sets it apart.
The man in the picture was precisely vertical, in sync with the lines of the buildings behind him, yet in every other picture of people doing what he did, jumping, they appeared to be straining against horrifying inequalities of scale.
It was reported by Esquire that photojournalist Richard Drew took a total of 12 photos of the same event. Although it appears that the man in “The Falling Man” is falling straight down, he actually did not fall with the accuracy of an arrow. Just like the rest of the jumpers, he went crashing through the air as he dropped.
After being published in newspapers across the United States in the days following the attacks, the photograph fell into temporary oblivion due to reader outrage.
