Defense Carries Titans Past Rams 28-16 for 5th Straight Win

In a matchup between two of the conference leaders, the Tennessee Titans defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 28-16, on the strength of their defence. Kevin Byard returned Matthew Stafford’s second interception of the game 24 yards for a score.

Tennessee’s suffocating performance against the Rams’ explosive passing offence was led by Jeffery Simmons, who had three of Tennessee’s five sacks of Stafford. The Titans were well on their way to a fifth straight win when Stafford threw two important interceptions in a span of 11 seconds during the second quarter.

It was entertaining to see them interact. We have a strong impression that this unit is now playing with a great deal of assurance. They could come in here and play like they did, limiting us to field goals, and we did well inside the red zone.

For the Titans (7-2), Ryan Tannehill threw for 143 yards and a touchdown while also scoring on the ground. Without Derrick Henry, the NFL’s leading rusher, the Titans’ offence was held to only 194 yards of total offence.

Despite gaining only 21 yards on the ground, Adrian Peterson scored a touchdown from 6 yards out with 3 minutes remaining in the opening game of his 15th NFL season.

There was 24 seconds remaining on the clock when Sony Michel snagged a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Marcus Mariota. This was the fourth time in 73 games that Sean McVay’s Rams hadn’t scored.

In the Second Quarter, The Titans’ Defence Made a Huge Difference.

For some reason, Stafford threw a desperation pass right into the middle of the Rams’ defence to try to escape getting sacked and giving up a safety.

After Byard returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, Geoff Swaim scored on a touchdown reception, and then Stafford threw an interception to Robert Woods down the sideline.

Worst Game of Stafford’s Rookie

In what was likely the worst game of Stafford’s rookie season with the Rams, he passed for 294 yards and threw the 24th pick-6 of his career, most among active quarterbacks (7-2). Four-game winning streak for Los Angeles snapped in only the fourth meeting in the past 15 years between the top teams in each conference.

After an impressive start to the season (eight games), Stafford looked wobbly and bewildered against Tennessee’s defence in the first half, prompting MVP chatter to fade. He played through an ankle injury he sustained in the game despite getting little preparation time in throughout the week due to a tight back.

McVay’s Los Angeles Rams, the NFL’s Least-Penalized Squad, Were Penalised 12 Times for 115 Yards on Sunday.

“We need to play cleaner football,” McVay stated. ”I want to see what we learn from our answer. The last time we experienced a setback, I appreciated how we responded. … This evening saw many occurrences that are out of character for us. I was proud of how hard our boys fought till the very end.

Injured

Although Taylor Lewan was in the lineup for the Titans, left tackle Bobby Hart got the nod instead. Vrabel stated that Lewan was “unavailable” unless it was an absolute emergency. At right guard, Aaron Brewer replaced Nate Davis.

Henderson sprained his ankle in the second quarter for the Rams but stayed on the field. WR Later in the second half, Jacob Harris went out with an injury from which we have yet to learn the full extent.
