What is Service Host SuperFetch and How to Fix It

I’m sure the first thing that would have come to your mind is that, what is Service Host Superfetch? How does it work? What do you do to fix Local System High Disk (svchost.exe) Usage?  Superfetch was originally created by Windows Vista as a Successor of Prefetch. It is a process that monitors your system, precisely your RAM usage and eventually creates a profile or display of all the applications and programs that run most of the time on your system. Knowing this it will load elements corresponding to those applications on your RAM well in advance so that the loading process is paced up.

Service Host Superfetch

The basic purpose of Superfetch is to fasten the application loading time in the hard drive. However, this is not the case with Solid State Drive (SSD) applications. Performance improvements cannot take place in SSD application, as by default Superfetch will not load the application in the memory. Sometimes Superfetch also causes spikes in the hard drive and CPU usage, mostly during gaming sessions. Such a case occurs in systems with a RAM memory of less than 4GB.

 Why Superfetch is So Important?

1. It reduces the boot time for apps that are not SSD based.

2. Loads most of the common apps efficiently and quickly.

3. Keeps track of your daily usage pattern.

Can Superfetch Go Awry?

Well just like any other Windows feature Superfetch can also go haywire sometimes and some issues may arise. Since most of the time Superfetch is running in the background, It uses some of the system resources such as the CPU and the RAM. Now in case you don’t have a well developed or a weak hardware system then this will lead to slowdowns and sometimes the system might crash down.

It may also happen that when you are booting Windows, your hard drive will start loading some pre-applications before windows can load its essential apps and services. This is okay if you are going to use those apps, but if not it will just end up slowing down the speed of your system.

Superfetch is not run as it’s own process, it is present under a common or generic – Service host. This is because Microsoft is shifting from the powerful and problematic .exe files to easier to deal with DLL files. DLL files are much easier to use but they require a shell to host them, hence the common service host for Superfetch.

Step 2: Just as the previous method simultaneously press the windows icon button and R. Then the search box will appear. Type regedit in the search box and then press Enter. The registry editor window will open.

Step 3: Once the registry editor window is open the next step is to search for and click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. In this folder go to SYSTEM and then CurrentControlSet. Next click on Control, Session, Manager, MemoryManagement and then PrefetchParameters.

Step 4: Next right click on the PrefetchParameters right pane and then choose New followed by DWORD value.

Step 5: Now right-click on the newly created item and select Modify. Enter the value 0 and this will automatically disable the Superfetch service.

Step 6: The last thing to be done is to click on OK and then apply the settings so that the changes made can be implemented by the system.

Another way of getting your system rid of this problem is to Restart your computer as you are freeing up the memory. You can use the Windows cleaner or any such app for this purpose. Once all the junk and cache files are cleared, you can restart the system.

The other alternative is to update your software version to the latest one available with Microsoft. Make sure the Windows 10 update is not disabled and get your system updated.

Conclusion

Without any doubt, Superfetch is one of the most useful and important services that run on your windows system. It is because of Superfetch that we are able to keep a track of the most used applications and open them very quickly. Other important data is also accessed at a higher speed and hence it improves the overall user experience.

However, as we know that every coin has two sides, so does the service Superfetch. If protective measures are not taken it can slow down the speed of your system effectively. Also, it is not useful for SSD applications. In all, it is a very important service and hence one has to deal with the shortcomings in the best way possible and make use of the solutions stated above.
