And Just Like That… Tragically Hip

The most recent episode of And Just Like That… is anything but “tragically hip.” Tragically Hip, the fifth episode of Season 1 of And Just Like That…, has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it is a disappointing episode.

The magic that audiences experienced with episode three, “When in Rome,” has yet to be fully reestablished, even though it is not as rough as last week’s episode.

‘Tragically Hip’ Recap

In this episode, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) visits her orthopedist after Seema (Sarita Choudhury) notices that she needs help to climb a staircase and learns that she has a congenital birth defect with her hip.

Carrie has been able to walk around New York City in high heels without even the slightest hint of a problem for years, but now she is having trouble moving around and requires hip surgery.

While this is happening, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Harry (Evan Handler) are having trouble adjusting to the new information that their child is no longer known as Rose or using she/her pronouns but is instead known as Rock (Alexa Swinton) and they/them pronouns.

Charlotte and Harry weren’t sure what this meant for their relationship with their child going forward even though Rock had previously told their parents that they didn’t “feel like a girl.”

In “Tragically Hip,” the couple learns that their child has changed their name from one of Charlotte’s friends. They later explain that they did so publicly in what has to be the most embarrassing TikTok ever, and they meet with the school staff to discuss how serious this transition is for Rock.

Charlotte is doing her best to be supportive, but Harry is upset that the school is considering Rock’s name change and pronouns seriously, saying that if they had their way, they’d eat ice cream for every meal.

It Was Annoying to Witness

Because the conflict in this most recent And Just Like That… episode felt manufactured and frequently conflicted with the actions of the characters we know and love, it was especially frustrating to watch.

For instance, Carrie’s sudden inability to climb a flight of stairs after having just managed to cross New York to get to Sex and the City felt fabricated and like a device to keep her helpless in bed so she could watch Miranda and Che engage in sexual activity.

This point is driven home when she miraculously recovers from hip surgery in three months flat and recovers with physiotherapy. Paying out-of-pocket for a physical therapist just because he was hot when insurance was willing to pay for a less conventionally attractive one also felt like a Samantha Jones move rather than a Carrie Bradshaw one.

The interaction between Che and Miranda also seemed out of character for the characters. Having sex in her injured best friend’s kitchen feels very different from the Miranda that audiences are familiar with, even though it’s wonderful to see Miranda examining her sexuality and coming to terms with both her unhappy marriage and alcoholism.

Che enjoys partying and smoking marijuana, but it seems strange that they would suddenly disregard Carrie and her boundaries.

Even Harry Felt at Odds With Himself

In this episode, even Harry felt at odds with himself. Prior to this episode, he had been supporting his child’s decision to not wear dresses and to explore their gender. However, he is now protesting Rock’s name change and is angry that the school is honouring his child’s pronoun usage.

Given how frequently viewers have seen him love his family without reservation, this felt like a setback for his character growth. Although “Tragically Hip” was a lacklustre episode, we can only hope that this is just mid-season jitters and that another strong instalment is on the way.

While we don’t necessarily want this show to be Sex and the City, we do hope that it does justice to these characters and gives us a chance to fall in love with them once more. Every Thursday, HBO Max streams new episodes of And Just Like That… online.
